Question:

Can a child open a bank account without parental supervision?

Let's say I was able to relive my childhood as a 7 year old through a time machine, go back and forth in the past and the future. My means of income as a kid would be playing the lottery, of course, with my time machine, I'll win every time.

With my earnings, will I be able to open a checking account without my parents knowing it? I'll forward all mail through a private letterbox at the post office (if they don't ask too much question).

Will professional/bank secret protect me?

  1. No.  Opening a bank account requires entering into a contract, which a minor can't do.

There must be a legal adult to sign for the opening of the account.

Use your in-room piggy bank as your bank.  At the rate banks pay interest on savings, there won't be THAT much difference.  And you can have as much privacy as your hiding skills afford you.

  2. No. First of all the bank would not open an account for you without your parent's consent. Secondly, as a minor you cannot enter into a binding contract. Therefore, since a bank account is a contract, the bank would be unable to open the account.

  3. Definitely not a checking account.

Possibly a savings account, depending on the individual bank's rules.

So ... good luck with that time machine thing. Let us know how it works out, OK?
