Can a child under the age of 18 refuse to take medications or receive medical care. Thank you for your answer. Serious answer only.

  1. No a child cannot refuse medical treatment or medicine prescribed by a doctor.

    His parents or guardians can refuse though.


  2. In the USA, the parents make the medical decisions for their children under the age of consent (18).  But if the child is mature enough to understand what is happening and the risks, they can go to court and try to become emancipated.  It could be a long process and usually only done for serious medical issues.  Many kids refuse to take their medicine - just say no, have a tantrum, etc.

  3. If the child is deemed mature enough and if they understand the consequences of not getting the treatment then they can refuse it.
