Question:

Can a cleft lip or palate be detected with a normal 2d black and white ultrasound?

I was just wondering, has anyone ever detected it?

  1. I agree with the first answer, a cleft lip might be able to be seen due to the fact its on the outside, cleft palate wouldnt be seen due to the fact that its inside the babies mouth


  2. no, only the lip! Sometimes a baby may yawn and you may be lucky, to see, like when my son was scanned 16 yrs ago he yawned so i knew he didnt have one! ! Please email me if you need any help, we have a little girl who is  6 and she was born with a cleft palate (no lip involvement) and my sister had a cleft palate too! I have 4 kids, she is the only one affected !

  3. A cleft lip could possible be detected if it was sever enough although a cleft palate wouldn't be.
