  1. A mainframe is a server. if you are talking about dumb  Terminals on the desktop running applications on the server, then Windows 2000 & Windows 2003 both run Terminal services providing the same function as a mainframe. Many interconnected LANs are really Trees in a Forest in wintows Terminology. The Forest being a collection of interconnected LAN/Domains that have Trust relationship.

By mainframe what do you mean, a mainframe can still run Windows Server Software.

    I hope this helps.

  2. Can it?  Sure.  Is it the best for your environment?  People who sell client/server will tell you yes.  People who sell mainframe will tell you no.

When you move to client/server you have to add support to maintain the clients.  Terminals are easily replaced.

    Depends on your environment.
