My sister wants to give away two cockatiels. I would like to have them because I like birds. We live in northern California near San Francsico. I want the cockatiels to live outside and not in the house. Is that acceptable? What kind of cage would be suitable? Can the cockatiels survive in the winter here where it sometimes get below freezing (not much) and there can be alot of rain? TIA James

  1. No

  2. NOOO!!!! DO NOT put it outside!!! Drafts are bad for Cockatiels and they can die from low temps. They are tropical birds and like the rain, but not all the time. I give my two Cockatiels baths by spraying them with mist from a squirting bottle and then I cover them up, otherwise they will get cold. But unless you have an outdoor aviary, which is like an outdoor cage for birds and it has room for them to fly and everything and sometimes a roof, i wouldn't suggest putting a 'tiel outside.

Here's a link that is for a website called Lets Talk Birds. It has awesome info on care, behavior, etc.

  3. Hello.

I live in the snow cold area ( DE ) and one year my cockateils lived outsides in the back yard aviary and they are fine . You just have to let them get used to weather first ( acclimate ) like put them out in the Summer, they will be fine by Fall & Winter . One thing though , buy a plastic roll ( in the gard ware store and cover the whole aviary so the cold air can't get it . In the Winter, check the water cups constantly , if it turns to ice, you need to change it for them to drink . Don't forget to give them a nest box for them to come in for the warmth . TM.

  4. why would you want it to live outdoors? i dont think it would do too well in low temps.
