I am currently in a college program. We have the best teacher. He is very knowledgeable, compassionate, and is an asset to our program. The has college decided to not renew the teachers contract stating it was “funding” issues, and then hired a different teacher who will start July 1. All 13 students have signed a petition and emailed the provost, president, and program directors regarding this issue. It has been three days, and no response. Is there anything else that we can do as a class to get our teacher back? Because technically we are the customers...

  1. In the UK this goes on all the time. Send a petition etc and good luck.

I hate to say this but I dont think you will have much luck unlees you have contracts that a specific teacher teaches you.

What can you do, well its finance led, so if you all decide to drop out unless the issue is sorted...... but I dont think you will go that far!

  2. It's not as common in the US as, generally, there has to be a reason to fire a tenured teacher. However, if the teacher is an adjunct, the school is legally in its right to not renew a contract. I'm assuming that the teacher hired to start in July is on a lower pay level than the teacher you like. Your question says "mid semester". Is July 1 mid semester? If it is between semesters, that is not unusual. However, if it is really mid semester, it is most unusual. Perhaps there is more to this than meets the eye. There may be facts you are unaware of.

The only thing I can think that might influence them is to make their hiring practices public, as in go to the newspapers. However, considering college and university politics, you may find yourselves looking for another college to go to. I don't have much hope for your efforts.
