  1. The MEL we use only allows us to defer the FDR, and only if the CVR is operational. It being worded like that would make you think you could go without the CVR as long as the FDR works, but I didn't see any provision for that. Like everyone else says, it depends on your operation ( Part 121 or 135), and what the FAA approved as the MEL.

MEL is minimum equipment list, if nobody else explained that.

  2. I'm not sure on this but i think its a go as long as your FDR or Flight Data Recorder is working.

What I mean am not sure which is which, the FDR or the CVR? But am quite sure that one is a go the other one is not.

But the category per MEL entry is one day, I think I am right now cause the FDR doesn't record comm. but everything thats going on the flight leg is being recorded the moment one engine is started it is powered already.

  3. I know USAF aircraft won't fly without the CVR or the Data Recorder being operational.

  4. I have seen the CVR as an MEL item (able to go without it), but I have not seen the FDR on that list so my guess is... CVR can be MEL'd, but the FDR may not.

Hope this helps answer your question.

  5. Depending on the type of commercial operation and that particular company's FAA approved MEL, they can dispatch without either cvr or fdr.
