Can a common house spider jump?

As i tried to pick up what looked like a common house spider it jumped away! have never seen that before. Have i had some exotic spider in my house?

Are you talking about the cobweb spider?  They can barely walk outside of their web let alone jump.

If so, what possibly happened is you moved your hand that had a drag line on it that was still attached to the spider.

there are jumping spiders usually have a white stripe on them, must be common have seen lots

yes common house/garden spiders can jump especialy when startled by a preditor, its most unlikely that you have an exotic in your house unless you have just cumback from holiday.

yeah they do jump. it also depends upon the specie of the spider.

try descripting the spider to get some exact answers you want.

What you know of as a common house spider may differ from everyone else.  The Jumping spider which is common in my house, does jump.  It will also attack you even though it has no chance of harming you. This spider can be identified by the fact that 2 of its 8 eyes are very large, and that it usually holds its legs close to its body.  The color patterns are highly variable.
