  1. It depends on the state law where you live. In my state employers do not need a reason to fire an employee, period.  They cannot fire based on a certain specific reasons, like race, gender, etc., but yes, here they can fire you while on WC, but not for filing it.  So, if you were off work due to injury and they needed to fill the position, they could do so and not give you your job back.

  3. Yes they can.  But, they need to be careful to have a legitimate cause that doesn't seem to be drummed up by the wci claim.  It's illegal to fire an employee for filing, but it's not illegal to fire someone who was a poor employee.
