Question:

Can a comprehensive claim cause me to lose my accident free discount?

I had my car keyed a month ago and found out the damage is $150 more than my comprehensive deductible. My insurance agent says if I file a claim, I will lose my accident-free discount as this is the second time in 3 years that my car has been vandalized. My accident-free discount is right at $150 per year, so his advice was to pay this repair out of pocket.

Is this correct? I have a feeling that he just doesn't want another claim from his office, which could impact his commissions from State Farm.

Thanks for any adivce on this situation.

  1. It depends on your state - in PA, no, if it is proven to be vandalism, and falls under comprehensive, it will not affect your accident free in any way.  But the laws vary by state.  If you don't trust him, put it in and see what it does!

  2. He is telling you the truth. I have state farm and my wife got her door  banged at a grocery store. They wanted to file it under collision. I ended up paying out of my pocket to get the door fixed. My deductible is 500 and it didn't cost much more than that.Talk to the shop that is going to fix your car and tell them your situation and if they would cut  you a better deal if you paid cash and didn't even file it in insurance it may surprise you. PS I got a break on my charges by doing this
