Can a concussion lead to becoming mental unstable/insane?

Concussions range from mild to severe.  I have not heard of a concussion be the direct result of a mental illness however.  My father merely banged his head on a cabinet door and had to have brain surgery to relieve the pressure but it did not cause any brain damage.  I suppose maybe if it went untreated, it  could do damage.  Anything is possible.
