Question:

Can a cop clock two motorcycles not riding side by side at the same time for the exact speed?

My husband was riding a motorcycle with his friend and they both got exact same speeding ticket, 30 over the speed limit. They were riding in a same lane but not side by side (they were going 90 so riding side by side is not safe). When my husband asked cop which bike did he clocked, cop told him that they were riding side by side, and that's why they're getting the same ticket. Oh, and cop gave them that excuse that he pulled them over and giving them a ticket for safety. That's bunch of bull. Can radar gun clock two motorcycles at the same time? BTW, we live in TX.

  1. it's impossible for a radar gun to clock two engines at the same time.  however, your husband will NEVER get that overturned in court.

    especially in TX

  2. going 90??????????????????

  3. Well if it was evident the two people were riding together pretty matching speed, it doesn't really matter. If one was going slower, they would not have arrived at approximately the same second.

And 90 is a little excessive so he probably did them a favor. Better than to show up at a road rash site listening to some auto driver saying....but I did not see them.

  4. It doesn't really matter.

They don't need radar to prove you were speeding.

The cop clocked one.  Used that one as reference for the other.

His testimony is all that's needed "they were going the same speed."  That's evidence enough.  Doesn't matter "side by side".

Your husband can commit perjury and tell the judge he wasn't going the same speed, that he was going 30mph slower than the other guy.  (I know it'll be perjury based on your question).

It'll be your husband's word against the police officers.

    good luck.

  5. when the rader gun shoots the laser of motion it got both motorcycles  going at the same speed so he didnt see if the were side by side he said wat he thought he saw both motorcycles will turn into one in the radar gun

  6. Im sorry for yout husband's recent ticket, it is never fun. (Trust me i got one for a failed inspection sticker two days ago) But you should go to court and fight it instead of just paying it off. Yes, riding side by side is illegal and you can get pulled over for it. Also going that much over you are lucky you didn't get a worse ticket. I would still try to fight it though.

  7. The cop probably was lying. I got a ticket when i pulled up behind a car that was already getting ticketed. There was no way the two bike cops saw me since they were parked infront of the car they had stopped and didnt come around the car until i was a few feet away. Aparrently I was speeding.

  8. it cant track both, but if the cop tracks one and the other is going the same speed it is safe to make an assumption

  9. I live in Texas and this is always in the news and the answer is no they cannot clock two different bikes, cars or anything at one time.........

  10. You said it, They were going 90. The cop clocked them or one of them at 90, and my eyeballs could sure tell they were riding together and were both going about as fast.

They were going 90. They both got tickets.

The mistake? When your buddy gets pulled over, don't stop! It's one of the first rules for riding with anyone.

    Been there.

  11. Definitely get a lawyer. You don't want a reckless charge on your driving history.

  12. If you fight it in court, which it appears you want to head its only going to end up in one way.

Your husbands word against an officer of the court.

Sorry, but unfortunately situations like that happen.

  13. Going 90 time to shift

  14. Don't pay the ticket, show up in court and talk to the judge. Chances are the cop won't show up for the hearing and the case would be dropped. 95% of the time the officer won't show up. As for clocking 2 automobiles at the same time, thats impossable!

  15. They were doing 90, and you say it was bull he gave thema  ticket for safety??  He should have arrested them both, for the safety of everyone else.  Idiots like that give other motorcyclist a bad name.

  16. no i dont think it can clock both at the same time, however, if the cop was watching the two bikes (even if they weren't right next to eachother) he would be able to tell if they are going the same speed if the one is keeping up and running the same distance consistenly as the other.... allowing him to assume, which is what a lot of our legal system is about, that they were going the same speed.

even though boys will be boys, they shouldn't have been going that fast anyhow... so if they got tickets, then they should just have to deal with it. sorry.

JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE THE ONLY ONES ON THE ROAD AT THE TIME, DIDN'T MEAN THAT SOMEONE COULDN'T HAVE PULLED OUT AND THEY COULD HAVE GOTTEN HURT.... NO ACCIDENTS YET.... MY BROTHER HAD RODE MOTORCYCLES HIS WHOLE LIFE,  HE WAS SPEEDING ONE DAY, WAS SIDE SWIPED BY A CAR, WAS UNABLED TO STOP AND SWIRVED INTO A POLE AND WAS COMPLETELY SCALPED. IT IS FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY... NOT FOR ANYONE ELSE'S NEVERMIND THE FACT A CAR COULD HAVE TRIED TO SWIRVE TO MISS THEM AND CRASHED AS WELL.... TOO DANGEROUS, SPEED LIMITS ARE THERE FOR A REASON....

  17. Some of the answers posted on here make me question if you even know what you are talking about. From a distance, two vehicles can look as though they are next to each other, even if they aren't. Radar does not use a laser to measure speed. Radar sends out a radio wave that picks up motion. It measures the speed of the object based on how long it takes the signal to return. And a radar can be used to determine the fastest speed between two objects. Example....I have a Monte Carlo and a Camaro coming at me. Monte is doing 55 and Cam is doing 90. By hitting the fast button, I can display the two different speeds at the same time. If I have two objects of the same size and only one speed displayed, it's safe to assume that both vehicles are likely going the same speed. And if one vehicle does not appear to be pulling away from the other, you can assume they are going the same speed.

Laser is another thing entirely. It uses a beam of light that reflects off the vehicle and is bounced back to the instrument. If I have a clear line of sight, I can give you the individual speed of 10 or more cars in a row. Both radar and laser can monitor speed of vehicles coming towards you and going away from you.

And it's not bull that it was for safety. You cannot predict what might venture out onto the road in front of you. Just this morning we had a motorcyclist crash into a deer on a heavily travelled major U.S. highway. Now picture if your husband or his friend had done that at 90mph. Odds are, you would have two funerals to attend. Because whoever was in the lead would hit the deer and the person riding behind would run into them.
