  1. If you have a disease that is going to require corneal transplantation, then, no, laser surgery will not fix this problem.

EDIT:  I stopped back by and noticed the comment about PTK.  I can really think of no corneal disease that would lead to the need for a corneal transplant that could be effectively treated with PTK.  So I would again say that laser would not be an effective alternative for a disease of the cornea that is severe enough to require corneal transplantation.

  2. You mean laser surgery?

Anyway, ask your doctor if you are a good candidate for Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) which is an alternative to a corneal transplant. It combines the precision of the excimer laser with the control of a computer, so basically they vaporize microscopically thin layers of diseased corneal tissue and etch away the surface irregularities. Surrounding areas suffer relatively little trauma and new tissue can then grow over the now-smooth surface.

The recovery takes a matter of days, rather than months as with a transplant. The return of vision can occur rapidly, especially if the cause of the problem is confined to the top layer of the cornea.

    Good Luck!!
