Question:

Can a day care supervisor remove part timers to accomodate full timer on waiting list?

They don't have enough space to accommodate the new full timers and so have to remove some part timers. And full timers on waiting list will get the preference over the children who are already enrolled in part time day care. Supervisor asked me to either withdraw from this day care or enroll my son in full time program. We have applied for subsidy and are on waiting list from more than a year now. My wife is a full time student and will complete her course this September. Financially we are not good enough to enroll my son in full time day care services. Taking day care service is not leisure but our inevitable requirement.

Please advise. Thanks

  1. unless you have a contract they can kick you out-we have a contract for a min # of hours per week for 3 years for each of our kids- she watches them in the evening though bc i own/work in a bar so it does not mess with her other kids hours most of the time

  2. Yes, they can do that. They have to give you the option of moving to full time, which they have. If you choose not to take it, that's up to you. It's always a risk to do part time daycare for this very reason. You may be better off with an in home person, neighbor, friend, family member, etc.

  3. Honestly, they can do whatever they want to.  They are a business more than anything and need to turn a profit.  So having 1 PT at $50 for example vs 1 FT at $100 makes perfect sense... even if it doesn't fit your schedule.  The misunderstanding I see is that many parents think that the daycare is a substitute family, who loves and cares for your child the same as you do.  And while they may on a day to day basis, they certainly don't have an obligation to fit into your schedule.  Sorry you are going through this but I would start to find alternative care ASAP.

  4. They can do that. They are losers, get a different day care if you can.

  5. If it is a private daycare they can do whatever they want. Sucks, but business is business.

  6. Yeah it's dirty but what can you do?  Luckily my daycare charges the same low price for full time and part time since my son is part time.

  7. I guess if its in the contract they can remove you based on their needs, but it doesn't sound fair.  They should provide you with references to other day cares...that's the very least they could do.

I would suggest you review the contract you signed with them.  Also, after this treatment I would move my kid to another daycare anyway.  I wouldn't want to do business with people that are just going to drop my kid out of their daycare.  Who's to say they won't do it again.

  8. I'm not sure if it is against the rules per se (maybe you could check in the center's business/family handbook if they have one), but I personally think it is not good business. If your child is already enrolled in the program, it is definitely not right to suddenly tell you that you have to leave. It is too difficult to  find child care in such a short notice. I've worked in a Child Care center before and this was not something that they would put into practice.

You may need to find another child care solution if you only need it part-time. Maybe a local college student? Although it might be a little more expensive, it beats paying for a full-time position if that's not what your need is.

    Good luck!!!

  9. Its a business strategy.  They make more money off of the people that need full-time child care.  Its not fair, but its just how the system works sometimes.  I suggest finding another daycare that is accepting part-time childcare.  You could also look into some state assistance if you are in need right now.

*Oh, I missed the part where you had applied over a year ago.  If I were you, I would start really hounding them to get you some sort of assistance.

*I would sit down and speak privately with the supervisor.  Explain the situation.  Perhaps she'd be willing to work with you until September.  Good luck.  I know how frustrating it can be.
