I have been in and out of different colleges trying to see what to do. I want to be able to build, maintain and troubleshoot computers, but I am a little confused in which direction I should go. Into the Information Technology side or the engineering side to become a technician.

  1. If you want to become a computer technician, all you need is a CompTIA A+ Certification. Get some books on A+ certification, study hard, register and pay for the exam on Prometric.com or Vue.com, select your venue. Attend the exam, pass the test, and you'll be qualified.

Experience is also important. Visit IT forums and websites and see how people troubleshoot problems. Learn to use Microsoft's Virtual Pc or Vmware Workstation.

Getting an IT degree sets you on track to become a programmer, developer, administrator.
