This may sound like a dumb question, but I have not flown since before 9/11 and will be flying in October. Is it permissible to take my digital camera on-board so that I may take pics at the airport, upon arrival etc.? Also, any link which shows what is and is not allowed in general would be helpful. Thanks!!!!! :)

  1. Yes, you can absolutely carry your digital camera on-board. In fact, it is much better to have all your digital camera stuff - including your memory cards, in your carry-on baggage.

Because digital cameras use magnetic memory cards, you do NOT want to check them - be sure to carry them on instead - the X-ray will not do any harm. Exposure to the magnetic security screening used on checked bags can damage the cards - imagine returning from your trip to learn your memory card is now useless! You do not need to have your camera "out and ready" for inspection. In fact, this causes delays. Simply leave your camera in its case in your carry-on bag, and place the bag through the X-ray. If the screeners wish to do further inspection, believe me, they'll let you know.

You can even take pictures during the flight - just don't annoy the flight attendants! And, like all electronic devices, be sure to turn the camera off when below 10K feet. They'll let you know when you can use them.
