Can a doctor also be a concert pianist?

I have been playing the piano now for 12 years... and I am choosing my university course. I would like a career which pays well, but which I can also be a concert pianist. I was thinking medicine or dentistry. I cannot live without my piano.... but don't want to struggle financially. Any suggestions?

  1. I'm a pre-med student and I've been playing the piano since I was four. Needless to say, I, too, cannot live without a piano. I considered taking up music for college but I decided on medicine. The reason? Well, I figured that I loved helping people with their medical problems more than playing the piano. I realized that playing the piano isn't something I want to do for the rest of my life. You have to ask yourself the same question: what do you want to do for the rest of your life? What will make you happy? Entering the medical profession requires the same dedication as choosing a career in music. If you choose medicine, that shouldn't stop you from playing the piano entirely. I still have classical and pop piano lessons twice a week. I joined the music oriented organizations in my university. Your initial decision matters most. Find out what will really make you fulfilled because no matter how difficult the course, if you really love what you're doing you'll never fail. Good luck!!! :)))   - allie
