If I do become a nurse with a four-year degree (BSN) and major in biology or chemistry can I then work for a few years and then go to med school an become a doctor??? Or should I go to medical school and work as a nurse somewhere around where my medical school would be??? What would be required for this??? Is this a smart idea???

I want to become an Oncologist.

Thanks

  1. go to medical school first and at the same time find a job for a nurse like maybe a nurse's assistant so you can have experience and when you finish your medical school study for your specialization which is  Oncologist which you want to become. Being a doctor can be a nurse at the same time, but for a nurse you cannot be like a doctor. Doctor knows more than a nurse.

  2. Yes, if you're qualified which you sound like you are....

  3. Your question asks "Can a doctor become a nurse?"  Your email describes becoming a nurse then becoming a doctor so I am confused as to your question.

To break it down, a doctor is a more glorified career and is seen as a higher status, however, being a nurse is often a better choice depending on where you live. In California, for example, a Registered Nurse working for a well paying employer (such as KP)  will make around $100k per year plus overtime and holidays.  They can do this after 3-5 years of college.  By the time a doctor makes decent money they have been in school and residency for 10+ years.  A family practice doctor often makes less money than a RN in California and works a lot more hours.  You can make a significant amount of money as a surgeon or specialist but again that is an additional 5-10 years of school, residency, internship, etc. and hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loans.

You tell me what job can you have a Associates or Bachelors degree and right out of school be pretty much guaranteed a job making 100K per year.  There aren't many, but nursing is that.  The pay is finally getting where it should be.

  4. Im sorry. The way you worded it makes it sound like you are a doctor... but want to become a nurse HA!

  5. Just become a doctor, you can't be a nurse simply because you have a couple of years of med school under your belt. They are separate degrees, that's what med school interns are for. If you become a nurse, then thats four or more years before you become a doctor. That means you're going to be well over 30 before you start practicing medicine. If you feel that you won't be competitive enough for med school right out of college, then yes by all means become a nurse and then shoot for medical school. But if you can get in to med school, the faster the better.
