Can a dog be a pony's companion?

The only animals we have at present are cats, dogs, chickens, ducks, and rabbits. We will soon be getting a pony and were wondering if we need to get a goat, horse or miniature horse for a companion.

  1. Horses are social animals and they love company, goats work pretty well but another horse/pony is the best. With the economy in such bad shape and people having to give up their horses, perhaps you can take one that will be homeless soon, in for a pasture pal?

  2. i have a mini who is kind of shunned by the working horses and since i sold my drafts (his pasture buddies)my pasture dogs took pity on him and stay with him all the time,he now has a full time secret service of pasture dogs.

  3. they sure can!!!

  4. No animal can compensate for another horse. Ideally, you should get another horse for your pony. Some people offer companion horses on long term loan or free to good home, or maybe you could find a friend to board her pony with you at your land. Some people will use goats, sheep etc. but nothing will be as good for your pony as another pony. Very much in the same way as a dog can be your friend and provide you with company, but will never be able to offer the same companionship as another human. My advice would to you would be try and find a companion horse or pony for your pony. He will be much happier.

But seriously...a mini would be best, another equine...a goat would be more likely to bond than a dog, but a non-harrassing dog would be better than nothing..  I think Rory is an exceptional case.

  6. most animals get alone with each other

  7. Sure they can.

Particularly if they grow up together.

  8. A huge YES. Dogs, especially big ones, will usually orphan any type of animal. I've even seen a dog who tried to make an egg hatch by keeping it under his paw. They will orphan any farm animal, including longhorn cows, goats, sheep, ducks, even chickens and geese, you name it. And somee dogs have orphaned cheetahs, and lions. Although, the bad news is that a grown dog usually will not orphan something unless it is introduced to him when the animal is a baby. even better as a newborn.

  9. Although there are horses and dogs in the world that are friends, I don't think anything takes the place of another equine. If you think about it, horses are prey animals and dogs are hunters. In nature, they would be enemies.

I think your pony would be lonely without another pony or mini around for company. Horses are such social creatures that they really need companionship of their own kind to stay sane.
