    Blu-ray players upconvert and play DVDs but not the other way round.

    Blu-ray is a premium priced ($5 -$20 more expensive) HD alternative to DVD ... not a replacement for it.

    You need a minimum of an HDTV to obtain any benefit from Blu-ray ... and ideally a large screen 1080p HDTV, with HDMI, and a good surround sound system.

    For many people upconverted DVD is going to look very very close to the same quality as Blu-ray.

    The data on Blu-Ray is smaller and compacted. A regular DVD player laser is to wide to read the blu-ray data.
