Yeah it can mean you are at higher risk of having a pulmonary embolus.

The reason that they checked this was to rule out if there was a clot in the lungs (a pulmonary embolism)

D-dimer is an odd test, as it's not diagnostic but does indicate someone is at increased risk of a clot.  However, people with elevated d-dimers can sometimes not have a clot, so it's tough to work with.  That bbeing said with chest pain (which can be a symptom of PE), and a positive d-dimer, it made your likelihood of having a clot higher than most.
