18 years ago my brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and he was prescribed medication. He quit taking his medication. For years he has lived with my mother in a 2 family house. He lives in the upstairs apartment and my mom lives downstairs. He doesn't like to talk to anyone and has becoming agitated when he hears or sees anyone visiting my mom downstairs. My mom tries to keep things quiet for him so he doesn't go off screaming. Lately there has been more people visiting my mom than usual. It's mostly to help with yardwork and housework. EVERYBODY knows not to speak to him because that what he wants.
2 weeks ago my sister was at the house helping my mom clean. My mother is 83 now so she can use help with things. My brother (age 45) violently attacked my sister (age 50). He repeatedly punched her in the face and she ran to the next door neighbor's house for safety. The police arrested him and he cussed out the police officer. My mother and sister have a temporary restraining order against him. They have to go to court to make it permanent. My brother is in a psychiatric hospital but he won't be able to stay there forever. Since being in the hospital, he's become more socially interactive with other patients. For him social interaction is progress. Must be the meds he's on now I guess. He is still not sorry he attacked my sister, unprovoked too. I know this doesn't make much sense but he attacked her because he couldn't deal with people on the property lately. It's not his property. It's my mother's. My mother would like to get in a long term facility where he'll be taking his meds regularly. If not he'll likely be living on the streets since he's too far gone to care for himself. My family is in New York City. What are the chances that he can get a placement somewhere especially since he demonstrated that he can be violent?
