I have a felony and am looking for a career path. I know some jobs don't care and that some don't even ask. I want to make sure i go to school for something that i can actually be.

  1. Sure, you can go to school and get an education in just about anything you want.  The issue is that a record of any kind will scare off some potential employers and close you out of some opportunities (like anything that requires a security clearance for instance).  A lot has to do with exactly what the crime was and how long ago it was.

  2. There's certainly no reason you can't become those things, but it's possible that it'll be more difficult for you to find employment than it would be for a non-felon. It also depends on what, specifically, you've been convicted of.

I think that, if you want to do those things, you ought to try for it.

    Think of it this way:

-If you don't pursue the career of your choice, you'll have to settle for some other, lesser kind of employment.

-If you do pursue the career of your choice, and you fail, you'll have to settle for some other, lesser kind of employment. But if you succeed, you'll have gotten what you want.

Failing and not trying at all have the mostly the same outcome, so you might as well give it a shot.

  3. Having a felony on your record, may shy away some employers.  But you will be asked to explain it in an interview.  If you are able to get the job done and work well with others, there is no reason you can't be successful in the field.
