I have been recently fired from a part time job selling cell phones for a violation of the companies policies. I am at present trying to become a police officer. I have gone through several processes with other departments and I am worried that when the background investigation is done with the department I am currently involved with if it will cause a problem for me. I am aware that a company will generally only release dates of employment but in the case of a background investigation will they reveal more?

  1. They can but they're not supposed to "trash talk" you.  The next company kind of does need to know why you were fired.  Like if you were fired for stealing, what company would want to hire a thief?  Its something they kind of need to know.

  2. Police officer? Background checks and all that? And you wanna try to hide something silly? I wouldn't if I were you, if they ever found out years from now they could fire you for lying on your app. even if you got hired.

  3. They can reveal that you were fired, but it is a violation of employee confidentiality to reveal the circumstances as to why.

  4. I work for a Human Resource Department in New York and the answer is actually no. As long as it didnt involve the police, they cant reveal a thing. Actually, if they did, you could sue them for the pay you lost for not getting the job.

  5. Good idea not to withhold anything, that way it can't come back and bite you on the butt.

I'm pretty sure they like cops to be honest.

  6. In your case they will do a in depth investigation.

  7. legally, the company cannot tell anyone you were fired. all they can do is tell the dates you worked for them.

  8. I know that it is illegal in some states, but it doesn't stop them.  The job you are going for knows how to find these things out.

  9. Yes, they can

  10. Yes, of course they can.  As long as they tell the truth.

If the violation was not a law violation this should not keep you from becoming a cop.

    Good Luck

  11. I do not think they are supposed to do that. The employers only tell you when you started/left the job, What kind of worker you were. They also tell potential employers about your attendance.

  12. Yes and Yes.

  13. no, they can say u worked for them and that you no longer work for them and thats it..they can simply verify employment

  14. nope sure can't it is against the law

  15. yes they can reveal everything on your work performance, Attendance, honesty and so forth

  16. No. To be safe, don't list the job on your application.

  17. Yes.  Your former employer is under no obligation to do anything but tell the truth.

  18. Yes certainly they can

  19. I would imagine.  That's why they ask for references.

  20. No, a background investigation involves only a criminal history not violations of a private companies policies. You are safe.
