The way I see it if the government is willing to give every jobless layabout in the UK a free house then I may as well get one.

Would sure beat living in halls lol

And how does council housing work?

:)

  1. Sorry mate if you are a healthy single native of this country and fortunate enough to not only be receiving an education but also be able to hold down a job to help pay your way, you are (as I found out) below the bottom of the list for council housing - sad isn't it.

On the other hand get your name down on an Housing Association list you will have a little better luck there although the property will be a single flat.

Most council housing lists are calculated on a points system called "Bands"  i.e. gold, silver, bronze.  housing with critical social needs would place you in a gold band etc.

You could sign up on the council housing waiting list no reason why not but if you are without "critical needs" you will be placed on the last list in last place to wait your turn (mine took over seven years!) and of course nothing is guaranteed except a long wait and having others who came on the list after you achieve properties sooner because of their "critical needs".

I learnt the hard way - honest, employed, paid my own way for myself and my family only to be constantly re-listed (put to the bottom of the pile) until a knowledgeable chap at work proffered me this gem of information "Don't bang your head against the system - Use It!"

I did not catch on for a while (being an honest sort of a bloke)  then one sunny day the truth of what he said dawned on me and I have never looked back.

Good luck to you stand up for yourself and do not let the grass grow beneath your feet..

  2. You can put yourself on the list and see what happens!! You won't get any housing benefit though, and as a student you shouldn't be paying council tax so that's not an issue.

You are as entitled as anybody else, though you'll probably be bottom of the list because technically you already have somewhere to live.

Yes single parents, the homeless and the disabled are usually top of the list though they still have to wait for quite some time. It really depends on what the housing is like in your area, where I live the wait for someone like you would be about 6 years. Also you don't apply for suitable houses, you're allocated them depending on your points, if you don't like it they just offer it to the next person. If you're in a poor housing area this will be the case anyway.

    Good Luck

  3. Council houses aren't free, you still have to pay rent.

You register your name on the council list and they give you a number of points depending on your circumstance. How many kids, homeless, age, s*x etc.

Then you look at the vacant houses they have available and when you find one thats suitable, you apply for it. If it's any good then they will allocate it to a single mum with two daughters and no income. If it has damp, in a really bad area with no transport, lots of vandalism and robberies and violence, then nobody else will want it and you may have a chance.

  4. Only if she is a chav single mother. The chav single mothers go to the top of the list that's how it works.

  5. no, your better saving up and private renteing
