Of course they can.  Sometimes it won't work (as you see for yourself), but then again same s*x friendships sometimes don't work either.  My best friend of 20 years is a guy and neither of us want something more.  In fact, that's be almost as gross as incest.

No they can't be just friends or any type of friend because this is haraam in Islam.  Now a girl and a guy may start out as friends, but they will gradually develope feelings for each other, and might even do something haraam like Zina. So it's not hala for men to have female friends and women to have male friends because you are encouraging Zina and fitnah to occur between the two opposite sexes.

I know what you mean though too, I try to keep my distance from having guy friends, because when i do have them, they always want more and flirt alot. It's not worth my respect and religion.

It's your intentions that count too. And you can always make it clear to them. Any guy friends that i have respect me alot and know not to say things to me because they know i'm not the type of girl. To be honest, in a way it's made them respect all muslims more

Yes of course they can. Some of my closest friends are men I've known since we were at school together. I am no more attracted to them or they to me as we would be to our own siblings. Men who have female friends make better husbands as they have a better insight into what women want, likewise women who have male friends. It seems that Islam often leans to the lowest common denominator, always assuming the worst in everyone but most people have a sense of decency and virtue that should be trusted and respected.
