I work at a local grocery store that is union. I am working 2 jobs and at the grocery store, I let them give me the closing hours since they have enough people during the morning. I gave my manager my hours like 2 months ago. I called him one day to let him know I couldnt work one day that he gave me because on my availibty sheet I request 3 days that I can't work. the other 4 days are at the grocery store. He was complaining that I was limiting my schedule. He was threating me that he was going to give me only 8 hours a week. In my union's contract, it states that no part-time worker can work less than 14 hours. Is he allowed to do this, if not, should I contact my union rep? I feel that I am being singaled out.

  1. Go ahead. Do what you think will work for you.

  2. If he is offering you days to work, and your schedule conflicts because of other jobs, I say it's YOUR problem.  If he gives you a day to work, and you just can't make it, well, he is not at fault here....

Now if he only gives you 8 hours, and that's it, then you can complain.

  3. If in the contract is states that you cannot work less than 14 hours per week, there's no legal way he can make you work 8 hours per week only.

If he actually gives you a schedule with only 8 hours per week on it, then I would contact your rep.  Until then, all he has is empty threats to get you to work more for him.
