Can a group be by invitation only? Not public?

We would like to do a group that isn't public to everyone in the whole wide interent. Can we do a "closed" group--by invitation only?

Yes.  Managment -> under group settings click Membership click edit on the next page and then click Closed.  Once you do this, it is not reversible.

keep in mind, invites have been glitching for months- going to a private group may prove frustrating due to this- your memberships may not increase if the only way is through an invite the person never gets
