  1. Can it fit under the seat or in one of those little compatments they have at check in?  Probably not.

  3. depends on the airline and who's working that day.  The can be really nice about it but can also being giant jerks about it.  Call ahead and check if they have specific rules on guitars.

First of all, don't listen to Captain Jon's advice.  He's a puddle jumper pilot who doesn't know squat about the proper carry on size and inflight serive.  You may bring a guitar on the plane because I have seen it many times.  Airlines today have been cracking down on carry on luggage.  They might charge you extra for brining this big size of carry on.

  6. The maximum size carry-on bag for most airlines is 45 linear inches (height, width, and depth of the bag). Anything larger should be in checked baggage. No oversize packages or luggage can be stowed on-board.
