If yes, why aren't these planes used for rescues more often?

  1. No.  The terrain is too rough, and the elevation is above the altitude at which the Harrier can hover.  The Harrier is not suitable for rescue work because it is too expensive to operate and because there is no convenient way to load and unload passengers.  It's a tiny little one-seater.

Mt. Everest is just shy of 30,000 feet.  I'm not sure any helicopter can hover, even in Ground Effect, at that altitude.

  2. nope too high.

  3. since the Harriers /regardless if the british harriers or the US av-8 / are dedicated fleet aircraft i doubt it would be able to vertically land at bases in Afghanistan, let alone the mountains . when you will watch the harrier landings, they are just a little bit more than a controlled fall. landing in the mountains requires controloability, not just pure power.

  4. very doughtful, it would drop harder and faster in the landing position, due to exhaust blowing snow and reintering the suction tubine, and cooling the exhaust.

  5. No way.  The air is way too thin to feed the engines to give enough thrust.

  6. no it probably cant. the air is to thin to create any thrust
