Question:

Can a healthy adult man be legally denied a vasectomy because he's "too young to make this decision"?

It may not be in the laws, but can a clinic or a hospital refuse to perform this procedure? On the basis that, although an adult and without medical complications, he is "too young to make such a permanent decision" and the doctor does not want him to regret not having children in the future?

If you know of cases where this has happened, could you please cite a source?

  1. they allowed us to go thru with it BUT now we wish we had not

  2. what does it matter?  if  your doctor doesnt want to do it, do you really want him or her doing it?  if they dont want to, go find another.

a vasectomy is an elective procedure, i dont think they are bound by anything to do it if they dont want to.

  3. yes they can legally deny you.  they usually won't let a woman have her tubes tied uless she is over 21 and has at least one child.  it's definitely something that needs careful consideration and when you're under a certain age you really don't know how you are going to feel in the next 5-10years.

  4. yes because doctor's will not tie a women's tubes if she is, for example 25 with one child.

  5. I think they can legally refuse to do an elective procedure if they want, and yes a lot of them are afraid to do a vasectomy on a young man (especially a childless one) because it does happen that people regret it and change their minds, even if they're sure at the time that they won't.

You could try another doctor though because there might be one willing to do it.

  6. now days...yes, they are worried about you taking them to court latter for malpractice

in the old days...no, they actually cared about what their patients wanted...

...see what our society has become, what a shame

  7. if he,s too young, i think the dr. or hospital has to get the parents consent first.

  8. Any doctor can refuse to perform elective surgery, I suppose.  You just need to shop around.  I imagine most planned parenthood or birth control clinics would be more than happy to oblige.

If the reason is justifiable, like a genetic defect likely to be passed on, even a 16 year old can get a vasectomy.

  9. Nope, a doctor or clinic can't legally deny a procedure like vasectomy. They may try to talk a young person out of having it done. I don't know of a case in particular. I'm yalking from experience.

  10. They can legally refuse anyone they want for any reason.  That is the doctors' right.  He or she may have his or her own brand of morals.

I was refused when I was 18.  I succeeded when I was 21.  I never had children.  It was all about finding the right doctor.

  11. My husbands doctor refused to do a vasectomy because he wasn't "old enough" he was 21 and we had a child already. You will have to work harder to find a doctor willing to do it because a lot will not. my husband is almost 30 now.

  12. See the question from Pam, just a few above yours.

There is no law that prevents men from have a vasectomy below a certain age BUT the individual doctors DO have the right and privilege of not doing it for someone if they feel that it is not in the person's best interest.
