Can a home owner treat and eliminate termites in exterior walls?

I had a termite inspection that found termites in the exterior wall of my garage. A very prominant pest control company wants to charge 1300+ dollars to treat and protect at $225 each year after. I am not discarding the fact that they are experts, but I am wondering if there was a less expensive solution. Thanks

Here's a guide on termites. There may be something here other than professional exterminators. Be aware that your investment in your home may be worth far more than the cost of exterminators.
