I know that impulsion is achieved with rhythm, relaxation, suppleness and straightness and that impulsion is only true at the trot and canter but does your horse have to be in a frame...why or why not?

  1. galliano nailed it...I just will add that for most things you do with your horse, working in collection will allow for the balance and agility to allow the horse to perform at maximum capacity and to develop the correct musculature.

  2. First off: Impulsion is shown at all three gaits, not just trot and canter. Even the walk should show good impulsion with long relaxed strides that push off well from behind.  Impulsion can absolutely occur without the horse being in a true "frame".  Young horses should learn impulsion first before placing them in any frame at all except long and low, and with impulsion comes.....the frame. Without it, you are creating a look and not a true frame at all.  Roundness and suppleness comes from impulsion, collection comes from impulsion.  It all needs to start Before the horse even is collected onto the bit at all.  Babies that I start are ridden on a completely loose contact to allow them to find themselves, learn to balance and learn how much they can move forward.
