  1. call your light company and ask for help, they have people who will check out to see what you need .

  2. Yes.

    Several ways to go.

Split systems as mentioned do not require whole house ducting & depending on layout can cool/ heat certain areas.

A central unit requires whole house ducting & depending on living areas in a multi level home .

If ducting is a problem coming from a single unit , can use 2 smaller ones to serve upper & lower floors if there is attic space.

There are also high velocity central units used in new constr.& renovation work.

Still require ducting but it is much smaller & easier to route than regular metal  or larger flex ducting.

Might search one of the knowledge partners like This Old House.

    Best regards

  3. A/c tech is right.A couple of mini split ductless a/cs is the way to go.

The duct work and drops would cost you a fortune along with the total install ,but could be achieved.

Still ductless splits are the way to go.Good luck.

Check out Friedrich.com for some of the best ones.

  4. Yes, mini-split is one way to go.  Here's what's involved in installing a system:

However, another option that can work is to install two separate central air systems. One air-handler goes in the attic, one in the basement, and each is connected to a separate compressor outside. This eliminates the need for running ducts through walls if the house doesn't already have ducts. But it is not inexpensive.

  5. yes, you can put a/c in, but it may be costly to put in ductwork.  My suggestion is to get estimates from several reputable a/c contractors and see what they say.

  6. Yes it can but unless the house already has ductwork for the heat you will have to run all the ductwork.  That could be a big chore and very expensive as you will have to rip walls and ceilings open.

  7. Yes it can. Here's the answer.

All depends how much money you have to spend on it.

  9. Of course, any house that has no air conditioning can have  one installed, but if you don't have any ducts already, then you will need to have those intalled first then you can have an ac installed.

  10. It did not need it then. Why does it need it now?

  11. Yes you have seen them on TV they are mini splits and require no duct work. They work very well and you can zone the house with them so you can save money.

  12. yes, if it has ductwork and a forced air furnace already. otherwise you will have to install both.

even if you have both, it may take some extra work, as old furnaces were not designed with central air in mind.

when i was a kid, we had to hack up a 1931 vintage furnace so the evaporator coil would fit. we also had to juice up the fan motor speed.
