Can a hurricane destroy a bridge?

Say for instance, a hurricane were to descend on San Fransisco, could it destroy the Golden Gate bridge?

  1. I am pretty sure it can. I don't think anything is safe from a Hurricane.


  2. It depends on the hurricane or tornado category and the structural intensity of the bridge. I'm not sure how the Golden Great Bridge stands up to earthquakes, but an EF5 tornado is sure to tear it apart. I don't know the maximum wind speed the GGB could sustain.

  3. Absolutely. The I-10 Bridge was severely damaged in several places in Louisiana and Mississippi during Katrina.

    A hurricane in San Francisco would be an EXTREMELY unlikely event given the sub-60 degree water temperatures near the Northern California coast.
