  1. no they can't. hurricanes are formed from oceanic patterns.

  2. yup all of those!

  3. NO WAY! hurricanes can only form over large body's of water, (ocean). if you live in florida or any other states that have the ocean, you would know. but a hurricane could produce water spouts over lakes or rivers, so wacth out!

  4. Are you confusing hurricanes with tornados.  A hurricane is hundreds of miles wide.  As such, it needs something really big, like a hot ocean to make it form.

But then, although a tornado is much smaller, it also requires a giant weather system in which to form.

The American mid-west is tornado prone because of its proximity to the very warm Gulf of Mexico and the very cold arctic air from Canada.  Any time cold air mixes with warm air you get chaotic conditions.  In the case of the mid-west, it is one of the most active mixings of air on the planet.

Similar with the Atlantic hurricanes – they build off NW Africa, as cold air from the north mixes with the very warm moist air in the region.  Unfortunately for the Caribbean and the East Coast of USA, the hurricanes then head for them.

If you live mid-west or east coast, take out plenty of home insurance.

  5. no

  6. No. Hurricanes are formed near the equator in the Atlantic ocean west of the African coast. Rapid water vaporization in the high temperature causes strong convectional currents that start rotating and traveling over to ocean all the way to the Gulf of Mexico and as soon as they get to land they start to weaken. The convection currents above a lake or a river or a pond are nothing close to strong to cause a hurricane, even if the temperature is really high.

  7. Actually it can form over a lake.  In September 1996, a category 1 hurricane formed in Lake Huron. It was called Hurricane Huron. It's extremely rare but this is the only This link will give you the factors that supported it's development and pretty much everything one would want to know about it:
