  1. Kate, have you never heard of Murphy's law? How about O'Toole's corollary? (Murphy is an optimist.)

Just use your imagination. You did not say what the method of conveyance was, so you are on your own. Snow, rain, flood, fog, mechanical problems, broken track, etc.

    Just have fun with it.

    Regards,

    Dan

  2. 22 hours + 74 hours = 96 hours.

  3. The aircraft were delayed at the airport due to persistent fog.

  4. This has actually happened on Network Rail a few times.

Or at any rate, a journey which should have taken a few hours turned out to be much longer.

Train breaks down, operating company can't get replacement quickly, train stranded in place where passengers can't alight, disruption to normal rail service means relief train can't get through, disgruntled passengers, frustrated rail staff, frayed tempers, claims for fare refunds, etc.

Fortunately a delay this bad is rare, but I travel Network Rail regularly and the trains are often late. Even a delay of a few minutes can mean a misssed connection, which in turn can mean the journey taking a lot longer than planned.

A delay of the kind you mention is more likely to happen on a sea-crossing where the vessel is seriously delayed by stormy weather or gets into some other kind of trouble, e.g. engine failure, collision.

There was an item in the news recently where passengers on a cruise liner were held up impounded in a port for several days before being rescued because the ship's owners went bust and couldn't afford to pay the landing fees.
