Can a landline phone have static?

I talk to some on my cell and their on a landline. They stress that a landline CANNOT have static.

  1. Yes, land lines can have static.  For starters, if they have a cordless phone plugged into a land line, then they can have static.  Even regular phone lines can have static.  I've used data phone lines that were so staticy (is that a word) that the error correction on the modem was kicking in left and right and forcing resending of packets, etc.

    Having said all that, with more and more fibre optics, static on land lines is fast becoming a thing of the past.  There are still wires from your neighborhood box to your house, but aside from that it is all optical, which is not impacted by electromagnetic radiation.

    Long distance phone may go through microwave transmitters, which can be impacted by weather.


  2. A landline most certainly can have statis, and LOTS of it! For many reasons there could be a problem with the line. Some only have static when it rains... (again a problem with the line). At times, the phone company needs to come out and run a new line because of some (many causes) type of damage to the line itself, which does, indeed, produce static

  3. yeah they can.  They need to switch channels on their landline to clear up the static
