Can a lawyer become a foreign service officer?

If so what kinds of oppurtunities would be available to them?

Could they become an ambassador?

Sadly, yes, they can.  Just kidding, of course -- there are many lawyers in the Foreign Service, in all five cones (consular, management, public diplomacy, economic, and political).  Really, in terms of opportunities, they are they as for anyone -- while legal training would give a candidate some benefits, that is just one factor for advancement, along with interpersonal skills, foreign language ability, writing ability, analytical skills, et al.


  2. Yes, take the foreign service exam and see where it leads you!
