My system in Florida froze up. Repair man said coil leaking slowly so he added R22 Refrigerant as a temporary fix and that coil can't be rebuilt and that a complete new HVAC/Furnace system would have to be installed at $ 3900. The systems was the original when the home was built in 1993. What is the usual life span of these systems.

  1. I had a repairman once braze an aluminum coil.  He said it might not last long but it has lasted 2 years.  Most systems play out at around 10 or 12 years I believe.

  2. If the leak can be accessed, it can be repaired. Not many want to repair because they make more on new installation. I would check prices before giving the go on replacement.

  3. there s a stop leak additive made by a company named cliplight.

ive used it probably 20 times over the last 3 yrs and havent had a call back yet. it costs me 48 bucks  for the can, takes about a half hour to put it in if done correctly and it says it fills future leaks since it is a sealed system and will continually circulate.

not all leaks can be found and this stuff seams to work well and wont kill the compressor.

  4. No a leaking coil cannot be repaired, but you can replace just the coil.

  5. A leaking coil can be repaired and or replaced. Depending on how close you live to the coast will determine your units life expectancy. 15 years if your within 10 miles to coast is better than average. If you have just a simple A/C system,

(not a Heat pump) you can replace just the outside condenser

    for around 1500.00 It's a simple 4 hour job.
