Can a lightsaber be real?

i know that lightsabers were originall George Lucas'es idea, but can they be made with today's technology? I heard somewhere that they r trying to make them out of plasma?

Not possible with current technology to give an equal effect of star war.

There 2 main types of technologies that are present in star war and there are several discontinuities.

The name light saber and laser sword (as said by anakin in Episode I) imply that this sword is a beam of light.

If you have watched star wars, the swords are volumetric, light\photons are not. Intersecting beams of light would not break each other. So the notion that its a laser is wrong.

If you look at the diagrams for the light saber, you will see that it is made up of a series of crystals and magnets.

As you know, no beam of light can do this.

The light saber diagram is more vague and show there are crystals that are charged, they emit particles that are focused by the tube and magnets and forced into a line. Its seems as if a form of cold plasma. The end is weak, so the most power would be near the hilt.

The secondary type of sword mentioned was a plasma sword. This sword was more powerful the light saber, was very dangerous. It emitted a red jagged blade and needed to be refueled. There are only a few documented characters that use this blade, many of which are early mandalorians. The blade was so hot, that the heat could burn the user. The mandalorians were armored. The plasma sword was the PRECURSOR to the light saber and was inconvenient to keep refueling.

The madalorians were the first to use swords and the first Jedi and sith came from them. The mandalorians are the only non-force users to be known to use light sabers.

Plasma sabers were only available with only 1 type of blade due to its volitality....

As for light sabers...

There are several types.

Most are straight as seen in the movies.

There are curved beam versions that are very rare which require 2 magnetic generators and cause the end of the beam to be jagged and somewhat unstable. Documented use was by a sith lord.

There are light claws, with is a glove with 2 short sabers sticking out.

There is a light axe that was documented in a story. It is unknown how the axe blade effect was achieved.

There is also a light whip that was documented, but it is unknown how this effect was achieved.

The sith and jedi originally lived on the same planet. The jedi were the regulars and the sith were the army.

It was the jedi that actually attacked first.

A magnetically controlled plasma beam could be possible, but it would burn the user...

the way I understand it, it's theoretically possible but not with today's technology. a plasma weapon could be doable but the equipment for it would take up a whole room and the energy output would pretty much fry anyone who came near it.  as for a lightsaber, there's really no way to make a concentrated beam of light in a handheld unit.  simple science says that a beam of light will not just come out of something to a point and stop.  think about it.

My kids did so much damage with the nuclear-powered, singularity-sourced light saber I made them, that I took it away and gave them shotguns!  They are so much safer!  

I don't recommend the plasma-powered systems.  They are a joke!  Plasma energy is so limited in that the light saber output is only about 4 inches and only cuts through mild steel.

Remember, if you ban light sabers, only Jedi Knights will have light sabers!

The plasma jet swords these people mentioned would need an *** load of electricity to make a jet longer than 2 inches, and a jet at least 4 inches would create a lot of unwanted thrust.

We have used ultra-violet lasers to create ionized beams of air that can conduct electricity. This technology is currently being tested by the TASER company for long-range electrocution.

If two beams were made to intersect and have high voltage current run trough the beams, a cicuit would be made, creating a sword able to zap and burn the **** out of a person! Now we just need a powersource...
