Can a mini split air conditioner with a heat pump heat well in the winter time?

I am considering a three zone mini split a/c with a heat pump, but am worried it will not heat well in the winter time. I am in the DC area. Has anyone used the mini split a/c in a cold, northern environment?

  1. Are you using this to REPLACE or SUPPLEMENT your existing system?  Making the rash assumption that you already have gas or oil heat, this could be quite a nice setup - running the heat pump in moderate temperatures would be very efficient, and only when it gets colder would you then need to use the oil or gas.

Now getting all this to work at peak efficiency in all loads and temperatures, with the varying prices of fuels could be quite a programming challenge, but could make a great hobby!

One pitfall I do see is that using this heat pump mode only as a supplement probably wouldn't qualify you for home heating electric rates, but that's between you and your utility.

  2. If you are used to gas heat it won't feel as warm but yes it's a good idea.

  3. How many days are below 40 degrees, because below that temp you will need supplemental heat.

  4. Efficiency of heat pumps goes down when the temperature drops outside to less than freezing.  Most heat pumps compensate by having electrical coils, that can heat via more conventional electric resistance heat.  This is more expensive.....

Look at the manufactuers specs on the mini unit, and don't be afraid to contact them about the ability of the unit to heat, if it is going to be your primary source of heat.
