Can a mushroom turn into something else ?

It depends on the kind of mushroom. Certain mushrooms can make anything turn into something else.

I've seen people use big mushroom tops instead of a burger patty, but that doesn't mean it turned into a burger.

Well, I've had some REALLY scary things emerge from the depths of the refrigerator, when I've forgotten to clean it for a while....and goodness only knows what they started out as....(smile)

Just offhand, could you be thinking of "slime molds", which used to be considered in the fungus family (and thus distant cousins of mushrooms)?  Those things have very odd shapes that almost seem to shift (they apparently have a "creeping" habit....see Google).  YECH!
