  1. A "nation" is a fiction contemplated in law. The real entity you're thinking of is the people. They are the nation or state and it is they who are sovereign, provided they can resist oppression from without and tyranny from within. Of the two, the later is much more difficult to control. The best example is the people of the Union states who have allowed the thugs in Washington to steal their sovereignty.

  2. What John H sed. Colonialism like in Iraq -- call a duck a quack if you please, it is what it is -- exists because a strong country needs resources that it believes it can seize by taking over a smaller and/or weaker country. But a Roman-style empire is obsolete. Colonialism is dead and Imperialism will not successfully revive it

  3. no its sad it used to be such a nice country now it is run by thugs.

  4. There are currently.... and have been previously... much worse than Mugage's regime in Zimbabwe.

And we just sit back an watch.

But as to your original question, which I think is.."Should humanitarian or human rights issues give you the right to force regime change?"

    Morally.. the answer is yes.

But practically... the answer is no.

Look at Iraq....OK... so the whole reason was a lie and it was an illegal war... but Saddam was a brutal dictator who needed to be removed... theoretically the Iraqi people should be better off without him, but they are not... the same would happen if we invaded Zimbabwe...or Burma... or North Korea...or......wherever.

Enforced change never works.... change has to come from within...

  5. A nation can be sovereign as long as it is strong enough to resist those who oppose its existance. Power and the respect of other nations is all that maintains a nation as an entity. There is no such thing as a "right" such as you mentioned.

  6. So long as that country can defend itself, and/or other nations respect that sovereignty. Zimbabwe does not need to lose it's sovereignty, but it does need a more moderate government which isn't so paranoid about Western colonization or puppet regimes, that it attacks its own people for fear they will open the door for the West to get a foothold.

But neither should the Zim government sell out its country, or its resources.
