Unfortunately my campus doesn't have WiFi, instead they have Ethernet ports in every room. I was disappointed until I realized that I could maybe just plug in a wireless router, encrypt it, and than I would have wireless throughout the building. Would I have to own the network for the wireless router to work?

  1. If only it were that simple... the answer is no by the way :(

  2. yes and no

you can attach the wireless router to the campus network to broadcast it

Turn off the numbering service in the router ( dhcp)

Otherwise your service will be inconsistent - you may not be able to get into sites such as banking

Two router tables - one from the campus service router and your new wireless router

hook up the ethernet port of the campus in your room to the single wan port of the router

turn off the dhcp in the control panel

if you have problems call the tech support of the router company

  3. Lol yes it is possible. I've done it many of times. However if the network you are connecting your router to is set up to be STATIC instead of DHCP. Then you will need to know the static ip numbers, so your router can have permission to access the network.

    By numbers I mean:

    Ip address

    Subnet mask

    default gateway

    DNS server

It is really easy to find out what these numbers are. Just go to a computer that is connected to there network. and....

    go to start>run

    type "cmd" <hit enter>

    and type "ipconfig /all" <hit enter>

and there you go =) I like "d3c0y" and "Aedan Lindisfarne" answers too.

  4. yap. you can

  5. i go with decoy, if you have a wirless network card and someone has a wireless router your network card will find the signel, you have to look for one that is unsecured then tap into it use the default passwork (password or admin) then encrypt it to secure it to your settings

  6. Yes you can. Just connect an Ethernet port in your room to the WAN port on your wireless modem and configure your wireless router as if its WAN port is connected to a cable modem. Your wireless router is not going to reach much more than a room or two away because of all the walls. You would want to use a non-default SSID (nothing like LinkSys) and use an encryption scheme like WPA-PSK to keep the wireless network private or it will slow down to the slowest WIFI adapter your friends use to connect to your wireless network.

  7. the router gets hooked up to the modem

so if you don't have the modem you cant hook up a router...

but if they have Ethernet cables.. you could hook that up to the router but they most likely have it passworded

    so no

  8. Nope, you don't have to own the network so to say. Just plug your router into the wall, connect your laptop or computer, run the setup disc and it will walk you through the rest.I bet there are people right now sharing internet in your building. The SSID will be the name you see when you look for your router so personalize that. Just make sure you get a Wireless-G router as your computer probably doesn't support N (the new format) yet. Good luck!

Note: you will only need a modem if there is no internet service at your campus but there probably is, test it by plugging your computer into the wall. If you can get on the internet you don't need a modem.
