I Have a surfboard SB4100 Modem and a DI-514 router and they are fast but after 2-5 days it seems to respond slower? should I turn it off or unplug it at night or something like that?

  1. More likely it would just stop working (or reset every few minutes) but it's possible.  Electronics like to be cool.

You shouldn't have to turn it off at night or anything - they'll get warm but you should be able to keep your hand on it without any discomfort (like a hot cup of coffee).  If it's really hot, call tech support and ask if that's normal, it's slightly possible one of your componants is defective but I doubt it.

Just make sure they have air circulation all around them (top, sides) and that it's not sitting on carpet (which is like a heavy blanket on the bottom vents).

I put my modem at an angle against a wall on it's side so it has air around the top, bottom, and 3 sides - that helps it keep cooler.  I put my router on a scrap ceremic tile so it gets better circulation than sitting on the cloth table cover would be - a hardware store or flooring store may sell (or give) a single scrap 4x4 ceremic tile to you - they work great as hot plates.

  2. Yes it will slow down your speed. Then it will stop.

For slow internet you can check the following. many things can be done to improve system performance. Have a look on this. I believe it will help you.

  3. just flush the dns  this is a very common issue with modems / routers that are left on and the lease on the ip is expired in your cmd prompt type ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew

  4. Maybe. But probably not because of heat.
