Can a papaya ripen after its cut?

I bought a half papaya from the store but realized that it wasnt quite ripe yet. Can it ripen in the fridge or if I take it out...?

Take the papaya out from the fridge and place it in a plastic bag with an red apple, then leave over night.

Apple release some gas will ripen the papaya.
