I am 15 now but i am about to turn sixteen and i want a bmw. My mom and my step dad are very strict about the car that i can drive, but they aren't going to pay a dime for it. My dad lives in Washington D.C. and I live in North Carolina. He said that he will buy the car and we can split the payment between me and him. Is this even possible?

  1. It's definitely possible.  If he is willing to do that with you, then there is no reason he can't.  Check with your mom and step-dad though.  They might not be cool with that.  It all depends on what they say.  You should have your dad, mom, and step-dad talk so it doesn't cause any problems.

  2. You never specify which model and year BMW so I'll maintain my state of non-judgment. Besides, I know what it's like to get a nice car when you're starting out. I can't knock that.

To answer your question: yes your dad can buy the car for you in another state. However, it'll have to be done in your own (where you're licensed). He HAS to come down to sign the papers, unless the dealership is willing to negotiate over the phone and fax or overnight things. It's a huge hassle and he's not that far away that making the trip isn't worth it.

You can split the payment but it might need to be on a personal reimbursement basis, since most dealers wouldn't be able to finance half the vehicle to you. Of course, you could put up half the value in cash and have him finance the rest. Or you could just work that out on your own. If you intend to pay cash, all you need to do is hand all of the money to them in one form or another. Whichever way you go, one person has to step up for the whole thing just as far as the dealership is concerned.

PS - In this case, your mom can b*tch and whine all she wants but if dad's paying, then son's driving, and mom's SOL.

It may cause a bigger rift (if possible) between your parents but your mom may also resent that she has no control over your use of the car. Please just be careful. By the age of 20, I didn't know so much as ONE single person who was still on their first car. Please keep that in mind and be safe.

  3. yes

you can buy a car over the internet these days.

the easiest would be to have him fly in for one day.
