Can a patio umbrella stand in just a base or does it have to be in a table?

I have a patio set that doesn't accomodate an umbrella; can I just set up an umbrella in a base or does it need the table for extra support. I know there are special umbrellas that stand alone but I would prefer a regular umbrella base because they are wayyy cheaper!

It would need the table for support because it would fall over just in a base

You could take some 2 part clay like epoxy that is avaialable at wall mart, home depot, lowes etc and epoxy it in..not sure this iswhat I would want to do but it would hold it in for a few months..maybe a year

Most of those umbrellas are not designed to stand alone.  If the base was tall enough and heavy enough, you may be able to get by, but for the most part they need to be in the table for added stability.
