I have a friend and his father's job closed about 7 years ago. Since then he has not retired just has been doing odd jobs here and there. Four months ago he had double bypass surgery and is now back feeling good. He has filed for his disability insurance since they said he should take it easy. If he starts a carpentry business, will that effect his benefits and or retirement?

  1. If he starts a business, he is technically not considered disabled, from a financial point of view, and should not claim the disability payments.  How does he report it, is going to get caught, etc. is another set of questions./

  2. I think that the government considers 968.oo a month to be gainfully employed, then he will lose any disability benefits.
